What is Pecha Kucha? Go to Pecha-Kucha.org and see superb Stockholm Design Lab prez!

We kick off this week’s look at online presentations with a candid look at some of the iconic work of Stockholm Design Lab, as told by the studio’s Björn Kusoffsky and Thomas Eriksson. The presentation is originally from last month’s Tokyo Design Week edition of PechaKucha Night in Tokyo, with a bit of Swedish Style love thrown in for good measure.

Don't start at these words. Go see the presentation by clicking on Pecha-Kucha.org.

Know where term 'liberal arts' came from? Fun to find out...

Times Higher Education: The unholy market kills divine life of the mind, 2003-May-30, by Andrew Louth (via Nicholas Carr’s Rough Type blog)

The evolution of the university took the pattern of learning that characterized monastic life - reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation - out of the immediate context of the monastery. But it did not fundamentally alter it. At its heart was the search for knowledge for its own sake. It was an exercise of freedom on the part of human beings, and the disciplines involved were to enable one to think freely and creatively. These were the liberal arts, or free arts, as opposed to the servile arts to which a man is bound if he has in mind a limited task.

Of course, now we have proof: tweet what you know first (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

The messages that received the highest scores had three things in common: they contained something of substance, were timely, and provided the kind of information that users expected from the source company or organization.

Although content usefulness is a problem, company trustworthiness scores were generally high, with an average rating of 5.7. The companies with lower trustworthiness scores were mainly those that included advertising in their messages.

iMomus draws an intriguing idea about creativity from Gervais' Invention of Lying film at click opera

Next time you hear someone spitting contemptuously the word "Liar!", try this thought experiment. Imagine that same person, in a parallel world, cooing the word in a truly impressed, admiring voice. Now you're in a parallel world where liars are heroes. Look around, try things out. What's it like there? Is it better or worse than the world we know? Or is it exactly the same? Do we perhaps already live there, and just not admit it?

I highly recommend the whole article at Click Opera, http://imomus.livejournal.com

Lucy Vodden, 46; Inspired a Beatles Song - Obituary (Obit) - NYTimes.com

After hearing about her disease, Julian Lennon, who lives in France, sent her flowers and vouchers for use at a gardening center near her home in Surrey in southeast England, and frequently sent her text messages in an effort to buttress her spirits.

I was really touched to hear this. Sending her vouchers for her gardening shop--so sweet!
